Hystory of Symbian Operating System

Symbian OS history.(ST Series)
Symbian OS is the leading operating system (OS) designed for mobile devices and smartphones, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and reference implementations of common tools,originally developed by Symbian Ltd. It was a descendant of Psion'sEPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed.

In 2008, the former Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia and a new independent non-profit organisation called theSymbian Foundation was established. Symbian OS and its associated user interfaces S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) were contributed by their owners to the foundation with the objectiveof creating the Symbian platformas a royalty-free, open source software. The platform has been designated as the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009. The Symbian platform was officially made available as open source code in February 2010.
Devices based on Symbian OS account for 46.9% of smartphone sales, making it the world's m os t popular mobile operating system.
Design
Symbian features pre-emptive multitasking and memory protection, like other operating systems (especially th os e created for use on desktop computers). EPOC's approach to multitasking was inspired by VMS and is based on asynchronous server-based events.
Symbian OS was created with three systems design principles inmind:
the integrity and security of userdata is paramount,
user time must not be wasted, and
all resources are scarce.
To best follow these principles, Symbian uses a microkernel, has a request-and-callback approach to services, and maintains separation between user interfaceand engine. The OS is optimised for low-power battery-based devices and for ROM-based systems (e.g. features like XIP andre-entrancy in shared libraries). Applications, and the OS itself, follow an object-oriented design: Model-view-controller (MVC).
Later OS iterations diluted this approach in response to market demands, notably with the introduction of a real-time kerneland a platform security model in versions 8 and 9.
There is a strong emphasis on conserving resources which is exemplified by Symbian-specific programming idioms such as descriptors and a cleanup stack. There are similar techniques for conserving disk space (though thedisks on Symbian devices are usually flash memory). Furthermore, all Symbian programming is event-based, and the CPU is switched into a low power mode when applications are not directly dealing with an event. This is achieved through a programming idiom called active objects. Similarly the Symbian approach to threads and processesis driven by reducing overheads.
The Symbian kernel (EKA2) supports sufficiently-fast real-time response to build a single-core phone around it¡ªthat is, a phone in which a single processor core executes both the user applications and the signalling stack[5]. This is a feature which is not available in Linux. This has allowed Symbian EKA2 phones to become smaller, cheaper and more power efficient than their predecessors.
Competition
In the number of "smart mobile device" shipments, Symbian devices are the market leaders. Statistics published in February 2010 showed that the Symbian devices comprised a 47.2% share ofthe smart mobile devices shipped in in 2009, with RIM having 20.8%, Apple having 15.1% (through iPhone OS), Micr os oft having 8.8% (through Windows CEand Windows Mobile) and Google Android having 4.7%. Other competitors include Palm OS, Qualcomm's BREW, SavaJe, Linuxand MontaVista Software.
Although the share of the global smartphone market dropped from52.4% in 2008 to 47.2% in 2009, theshipment volume of Symbian devices grew 4.8%, from 74.9 million units to 78.5 million units.....

Once conceived in 1867, Bartholdi spent much of his time designing, re-designing, and promoting the statue. By 1870 Architect/engineer Eugene Emmanuel Violett-le-Duc, a renowned thoeretician responsible for the restoration of Notre Dame, was at work on the statue’s structure. His concept consisted of a base filled with sand (for stability to resist wind) and an upper structure of iron. He presented the concept at a banquet at the Hotel du Louvre in 1875, with much fanfare.

Work began on the statue itself in the winter of 1875. Initially, both French and Americans had hoped for completion for the American centennial in 1876, but fund raising was slow and the late start made that date impractical.

Work progressed however, starting with the right arm and torch, and by August 12, 1876, the arm and torch , 21 copper pieces, were completed, assembled, dismantled, packed and shipped to the the Philadelphia International Centennial Exhibition, where it was assembled as a feature exhibit. 50 cents admission was charged to walk up the steps to the observation deck, proceeds went to the fund for the pedestal, on which design work had begun. With funds running thin, Bartholdi and his workshop managed to complete the the head and shoulders which were moved across town to be displayed at the Paris World’s Fair in June 1878.

The enthusiaism generated by her appearance at the World’s Fair prompted the French government to allow a lottery for the purpose of raising the funds needed to finish the statue. Prizes were donated: a silver plate set, pearl and gem jewelry, a painting by Bartholdi’s friend Jean Gerome, even two works by Bartholdi, a total of 528 items in all. In addition, Bartholdi issued a signed and numbered collection of clay "Models of the Committee," sold for 1,000 francs each in France and for $3,000 each in America. By the end of 1879, about 250,000 francs had been raised for the statue’s construction. On July 7, 1880, the Franco-American committee held a "Notification Dinner" to announce that fund raising was complete and the statue would be finished by 1883.

In the meantime, Violett-le-Duc died in 1879, and was replaced by the designer of the Paris World’s Fair Exhibiton Hall in which Liberty’s head was displayed, Gustave Eiffel (who ten years later completed his own universal monument the Eiffel Tower, for the 1889 Universal Exhibition and Centennial of the French Revolution).

In 1880, the iron framework for the tower was begun in the yard of Gaget, Gauthier et Cie, and over the course of about 3 years the inner structure and outer skin were assembled piece by piece to Liberty’s full height of 151 feet.

The statue was completed in Paris in June 1884, presented to America by the people of France on July 4, 1884. The statue was dismantled and shipped to US in early 1885, transported by the French frigate "Isere". The finished statue consisted of 350 individual pieces shipped to the US in 214 crates.

179,200 pounds (81,300 kilograms) of copper was used in Statue. 250,000 pounds (113,400 kilograms) of iron. Total weight of the Statue is 450,000 pounds (225 tons). The thickness of Copper sheeting is 3/32 inch (2.37mm), about the thickness of a penny.

Singh Wants To BAN Facebook in INDiA

Singh wants to ban Facebook in India!
The ongoing movement for the Lokpal Bill, also termed as the second freedom struggle, has evoked patriotism for many in the country.

But Ranjeet Singh (36), a residentof Bhandup, who was looking up Anna Hazare, came across a Facebook community defiling the country.

Singh, who has been using Facebook for over a year, on Wednesday came across a community, 'Two words are enough; F*** India'. This hurt his patriotic sentiments, he claimed.
Singh went to the Bhandup policestation to register a complaint against the community.
"I was searching for opinions on Anna Hazare and his fast when I stumbled upon this community onFacebook. It was really derogatory to see the page hurled with abuses.
It had a picture of a dog crapping on the flag and other such desecrations to the Tricolour," Singh said.
Ironically, there is a community on Facebook called 'Petition for Facebook to delete F*** India group', which has 2,202 membersin comparison to the 4,725 members the hate community has garnered.
Singh wanted to file an FIR but the police asked him to write a complaint that they could forward to the Mumbai police cyber crime department.
Singh said, "Today, social networking websites boast of great powers but a community like this has hurt my sentiments as a citizen of India. I hope that the community is deleted, or at least banned, in the country."
'Will take action'
Singh added, "If, by Monday, no action is taken against the community, I will go to the police commissioner. No one can get away with insulting the country.
As a citizen, I am doing my duty and hope to get support from thelaw and other bodies in the country."
Cyber crime department's Senior Inspector More said that the matter is being looked into and action will be taken soon..

US-based company is planning to roll out the world¡¯s first electronic eyeglasses, called emPower,that will make tedious bifocals history.The company has developed electronic spectacles that promise to allow bifocal wearers to switch between different prescription settings for reading and more distant viewing.The lenses contain a thin layer of liquid crystal that changes its alignment when prompted, thereby changing the strength of focus.All the emPower wearer needs to do is tilt his head downward or manually touch the frame and the reading prescription is activated ¨C and vice versa.The glasses were unveiled last month during the International Vision Expo East in New York and are set for a US release this summer.Each eight-hour battery charge allows for two-to-three days of switching between focus settings.

FINGERPRINT TECHNIQUE

The Henry system finally enabled law enforcement officials to classify and identify individual fing0…2erprints. Unfortunately, the system was very cumbersome. When fingerprints came in, detectives would have to compare them manually with the fingerprints on file for a specific criminal (that's if the person even had aa record). The process would take hours or even days and didn't always produce a match. By the 1970s, computers were in existence, and the FBI knew it had to automate the process of classifying, searching for and matching fingerprints. The Japanese National Police Agency paved the way for this automation, establishing thefirst electronic fingerprint matching system in the 1980s. Their Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) , eventually enabled law enforcement officials around the world to cross-check a print with millions of fingerprint records almost instantaneously.

That changed in 1999, with the introduction of Integrated AFIS (IAFIS) . This system is maintained by the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division. It can categorize, search and retrieve fingerprints from virtually anywhere in the country in as little as 30 minutes. It also includes mug shots and criminal histories on some 47 million people. IAFIS allows local, state and federal law enforcement agencies tohave access to the same huge database of information. The IAFIS system operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
But IAFIS isn't just used for criminal checks. It also collects fingerprints for employment, licenses and social services programs (such as homeless shelters). When all of these uses are taken together, about one out of every six people in this country has a fingerprint recordon IAFIS.

Girl beheaded in campus of St Xavier''s College by jilted lover in Ranchi

Ranchi, Apr 27 (PTI)
A teenaged girl student was beheaded in the campus of the prestigious St Xavier''s College here by her jilted lover, police said.

"Kusum Kumari (17) was beheaded with a sharp weapon in the campus of St Xavier''s College by a young man who was identified as Vijendra Prasad," Superintendent of Police Sambhu Thakur told PTI here.

Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said Prasad admitted during interrogation that both he and Kumari hailed from Sonari area of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and he loved her for the past five years.

However, it was a one-sided affair, the SSP said, adding, Prasad had the intention of committing suicide after killing her but was overpowered by students before he could do that.

Kumari was an intermediate science student in the Ranchi Women''s College and her centre for the ongoing examination was the St Xavier''s College and she was writing the second year exam of the Jharkhand Intermediate Council.

"Her examination was in the second half. As soon as she came out of the examination hall at about 5.15 pm, the boy pounced on her and beheaded her with a sharp weapon. The students present there caught the youth immediately and handed him over to the police," a St Xavier''s College lecturer said.

The boy is studying in a Jamshedpur college.

Kumari''s body was sent for post-mortem and the weapon used in the murder was seized.

No access to p*rn in cyber cafes, declared new rules(must see)

NEW DELHI: Fresh guidelines, which are part of Information Technology (guidelines for cyber cafe) Rules 2011, will require cyber cafe owners to
"tell users" not to surf websites that contain
"pornographic or obscene
material". Experts termed the rule arbitrary, saying that watching pornography is not an offence in India.

According to the rules notified on April 11, all cyber cafes in
the country will have to
register with an "agency as
notified" by the government. While some of the guidelines deal with the security threat
posed by "anonymous
internet users", most aim to make sure that people don't use cyber cafés to access pornographic material.

Pawan Duggal, a lawyer who specializes in IT laws, said the new guidelines were arbitrary. "Watching
pornography is not illegal in India," he said. "It's absurd to ask cyber café owners to tell their customers not to access
pornographic material even as law allows individuals to access adult websites unless
it's not child pornography. The new rules require a second look."

The new rules suggest café
owners install filtering
software and keep a log of all websites accessed by
customers for at least one
year. Café owners have also been asked not to build a cabin/cubicle with a height of more than four and half feet.
In a cyber café where there
are no cubicles, "owners will have to place computers with the screens facing outward"or towards open space. The move is aimed at reducing privacy a cyber café user can get.

Duggal said if implemented
earnestly, the new rules will
put most of cyber café
owners out of business.

The new rules make it
mandatory for user to carry an identity card. Cyber café owners have been asked to
give user logs to the
"registration agency" every month as well keep these
records along with the log of websites accessed at the cyber café safe for a period of one year. A few café owners said
that technically, it would be a daunting task to keep a
record of every website
accessed using their computers
for a year.

Dubai Police have found illegal use of Chinese 'magic pen' used to forge cheques and documents with its vanishing ink, a news report has said.

The raids were conducted after Dubai police recently sent an urgent circular to all UAE-based banks to be aware of the usage of a Chinese pen which has an ink that vanished few hours after using it.

The ink could be used to forge cheques and documents.

he magic pen resembles a normal pen but the ink differs.

The Chinese pen's ink lasts for about one to four hours after writing.
Dubai Police had sent an urgent memo to the UAE Central Bank to circulate to all banks operating in the country to avoid using such pen when signing official documents and cheques.

Ancient kingdom found in China Biggest Mistry Ever

An unknown kingdom dating back to 1046 BC has been unearthed in north China, archaeologists said.
The kingdom is probably from the Xizhou dynasty (1046 to 771 BC), Xinhua reported.
Engraving on bronze wares found in tombs in Shanxi province's Linfen city indicate that the region was reigned by Ba Bo, or Count of the Ba kingdom, the archaeologists said.

The Ba kingdom had never been seen in any historical record before, they said.

"The tombs gave us a chance to see the Ba kingdom that had been forgotten by history. It also sheds light on the Xizhou dynasty's feudal system and technology as well as exchanges and integration of different ethnic groups of that time," said Wang Wei, head of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"Records of the kingdom might have been lost in history. It is also possible that Ba was among a cluster of small kingdoms and was neglected by ancient historians", said Xie Yaoting, deputy head of the Shanxi Institute of Archaeology.

Five-in-one vaccine to be introduced soon in india

NEW DELHI: After years of discussion and a recent promise to Bill Gates, India is now rolling out the country's first pentavalent vaccine. The Union health ministry has written to the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala — the two states where the
five-in-one vaccine will be
first introduced, because of
their high routine
immunization coverage rate, to put in place manpower, train them and also finalise the
implementation plan.

The ministry has also sent a
letter to the Global Alliance
for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) asking them to dispatch the vaccine doses at the earliest.

GAVI, which is providing the vaccines free of cost to the ministry for the time being, has asked UNICEF to procure the vaccines and send them to India.

India plans to vaccinate 16
lakh children in these two
states in the first year. The
five-in-one vaccine will have
diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis B and HIB (Haemophilus influenzae type
B -- the bacterial
microorganism that causes
several serious childhood
illnesses like meningitis and
pneumonia).

Besides this shot, children will also get their oral polio doses as part of the routine immunization rounds.
"We are bringing to India the
liquid pentavalent vaccine
which are readymade. It will
be a 10-dose package which
will prove cheaper since it will
require less storage space, lesser volume of cold chain
and reduced transportation
cost.

All children attending the
routine immunisation rounds
will get the pentavalent shot
at 6, 10 and 14 weeks. For the first year, we will require
over 50 lakh doses. The
vaccine vials will reach us by
the end of June and the
vaccine use will be rolled out
immediately after that," a ministry official said.

"HIB will prevent pneumonia
in children. In the under five
mortality, 20% are caused by
pneumonia. And one-third of
the pneumonia mortality is
caused by HIB," the official added.

The health ministry had
initially thought of
introducing pentavalent in 10
states, including Himachal
Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir
and Karnataka. However, the vaccine's cost made the
ministry start with just two
states.

The introduction of a
pentavalent vaccine was
recommended by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) on June 16, 2008.

Seven close relatives of a girl, including her parents, were arrested on Friday in a remote village of Chhattisgarh after
they chopped off her nose to punish her for eloping with and marrying a village boy, police said.

The arrests were made from Rahmankapa
village in the state's
Kawardha district, some 280 km from Raipur. Police said family members of 19-year- old Nanki Bai were highly upset after she eloped on April 19 with village boy Narendra, 19. The boy and the girl returned on April 20 after getting married at a temple in Raipur. &quot;After returning to the village, the girl was living with her husband's family,&quot;

Sushil Malik, head of Pandariya police station that covers Rahmankapa village, told IANS over phone. &quot;The girl's
parents and five other close
relatives stormed into her in- laws' house and dragged her into a room and chopped off her nose to punish her for
love marriage,&quot; he added.

Malik added that the girl's
family chose to attack her
when most of her in-laws were not home. Later,

relatives, including three
women, were arrested for house-trespass, criminal

A 'vampire mother' has had 'horns' implanted

A 'vampire mother' has had titanium 'horns' implanted, to complement the tattoos that cover almost 100 per cent of her body.

Maria Hose Cristerna, a mum of four from Mexico, showed off her unusual looks at a tattoo exhibition in Monterrey in California recently.

She had her body transformed as a reaction to enduring years of abuse at home.

The striking look is completed by specially shaped vampire 'fang' teeth, fake eye colours and massive earrings – but she's not finished yet! The 35-year-old claims that she wants even more horns implanted.
'Tattoos were a form of liberation for me – my way of being immortal - and the horns I have are a symbol of strength and were implanted without anaesthetic,' she told The Sun.
'I had the fangs done because I loved vampires as a little girl and I changed the colour of my eyes so they were how I really wanted them to be.'

Archaeologists have unearthed what they believe are the remains of the first known stone age gay man who was buried like a woman some 5,000 years ago.

The skeleton, discovered during an excavation near Prague in Czech Republic and believed to

date back to between 2900 and 2500 BC, was pointing eastwards and surrounded by domestic jugs -- rituals only previously seen in female graves.

According to the archaeologists, the way he was buried, it suggests that he was of a different sexual persuasion, the Daily Mail reported.

During that period, men were traditionally buried lying on their right side with the head pointing towards the west; women on their left side with the head facing east.

In this case, the researchers said, the man was on his left side with his head facing west.

According to them, Stone Age men tended to be interred with weapons, hammers and flint knives as well as several portions of food and drink to accompany them to the other side.

Women would be buried with necklaces made from teeth, pets, and copper earrings, as well as domestic jugs and an egg-shaped pot placed near the feet.

And the "gay caveman" was found buried with household jugs, and no weapons. The archaeologists said they don't think it was a mistake or coincidence given the importance attached to funerals during the period, known as the Corded Ware era because of the pottery it produced.

"From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake," said Kamila Remisova Vesinova, who led the research.

An Alian Found In Cyberian Snow(Frighting)

It may just be an elaborate hoax, but a video has surfaced showing the body of an alien found dead in snow in Siberia.The slender, badly damaged corpse was found lying on a bed of snow with its head to one side and mouth slightly open, the Daily Mail reported.

The video, posted on April 17 on YouTube, has already had over 100,000 views and showed the body of the unidentified "creature".

Irkutsk, Russia is apparently a known UFO hotspot, and UFO believers think the body was left behind by alien visitors after an accident, or was missed in a clean-up by the Russian government as part of some sort of alien cover-up.

Dozens of UFO sightings are reported every year in the area, and only last month there were reports of an unidentified object hurtling into the nearby Irkutsk region of Siberia.

"We couldn't believe it when we saw it. And what was spooky is that there was no sign of the spaceship. Perhaps that was taken away and the body overlooked," said Igor Molovic, one of the pair that uploaded the video.
However, not everyone is a true believer.

Some believe it is actually a carefully crafted model of an alien's body, and not the real deal.
However, many UFO lovers still believe.

"It's so lame how people always get thrilled by having another excuse to shout 'Fake! fake!' every time something weird shows up. Unless proven otherwise, this is in fact plausible," posted one user.

Another said; "If this is fake - then they are masters at models/puppets. I think it's real - one of the very few, great vid."

Death Itself Given Life

died in a road accident last
week, 17-year-old Reena will live in the collective memory of five patients who have got
a new lease of life because of her donated organs.

Reena, a resident of Jind in
Haryana, was seriously
injured and was declared brain dead at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education
and Research (PGIMER) here.

Her distraught family
consented to donate Reena's liver, both kidneys and two corneas, giving a ray of hope to the five patients. Her liver was successfully transplanted to a 44-year-old patient from Uttar Pradesh April 15.
This was the first
liver transplant surgery in
PGIMER, one of the leading medical institute of northern India. PGIMER director KK Talwar
said: "Seven to eight
departments were involved in this operation. The donor, whose brain was dead, helped five people to live a new life. It is really exemplary."

PGIMER has decided to place a photograph of Reena in its premises - as a tribute.

The VVIP enclosure was away from the stage,while the gold class ticket holders gotto gather right in front of it. But the silver class pass holders stood behind the barricades that separated them from the reserved gold class passholders.

Akon expressed displeasure at this.'I have a quick question What is that separate section back behind those gates? What section is that?' he asked the audience as he pointed towards the silver class area.
'That's the silver class,' the audienceshouted back.
'What class is this then?' he questioned back.
'This is the gold class!' responded the audience.
'Oh! You mean they didn't have enough money? Come on all you people, come forward, come close! Iam going to pay for it!Jump up the barriers! Let's turn this into a party!' Akon said much to the delight of the audience members.
There's not much that the security could do thereafter. Young boys and girls just pushed the barricades and ran closer to the stage. And soon enough, the class barrier was nowhere to be seen.
'I got to tell you people that if my audience is suffering, I am not comfortable. There should be no class,and no matter how successful you are, I want to see you all together here,'said Akon.
The singer gave the audience thetime of their lives as he sang, jumpedand danced with them, and even went crowd surfing in a transparent balloon! If that wasn't enough, he jumped right into the crowd and went in alldirections - only on the support of his fans' hands. From the stage, he wentright to the end of the crowd, much to the dismay of the VVIP crowd,who sat separately - away from all the action.
'I so want to go to the gold pass area! I paid Rs.8,000 and got to have nocrazy fun!' cribbed 15-year-old SanaArya, who came with her parents. Bhavna Batra, a housewife, who was quite fed up waiting for the concert's two-hour delay, said: 'The wait was compensated by his performances. He put up a remarkable show. The way Akon interacted with his fans was excellent. No Indian singer would have dared to jump into the crowd like he did.'
Akon sang popular hits like 'Don'tmatter', 'Ghetto', 'Smack that', 'IWanna love you', 'Dangerous' and 'Beautiful', 'Taking it off', 'Sunrise'among others, to regale his Indian fans.He also cut his birthday cake on the stage, and shared it with some of hisfans - proving himself as a people's person.
'Yahi Shah Rukh Khan hota na, tohdurr se hi naachke chalaa jaata. Yehhota hai concert! (If it was Shah RukhKhan performing, he would have justremained on the stage. This is whatyou call a concert!)' commented middle-aged Ashwini Batra.
